My first comment, after reading your first sentence, is to be careful, ladders are dangerous.

Beyond that, beautiful post. Wow, our children will be old enough to be called serve in this next decade. Holy crap (is that blasphemous), my oldest already is.

This has been wild decade hasn't it. I was mentally composing a decade for myself. But, somehow I don't think I could have pulled all that out of me. Maybe I will link this.

Hears to a decade of positive changes in our world and our lives. Here's to friendships. Here's to raising amazing sons. Happy New Year!

We are thinking along the same lines again. I was talking with my mother-in-law yesterday about faith, and our mutually-held belief (hers and mine, I mean) that all people who are trying to live good, caring lives have faith in something larger than themselves. This doesn't have to be supernatural or religious. Faith in humanity, faith in people's ability to Be Good, even though it seems at times that so many have forgotten how...those faiths are as important (maybe moreso, we could argue) as any religious faith I've ever encountered.

I hear you on being to busy to blog. I have missed so many great blogging ops because I simply don't have time. I just can't seem to find the balance this semester. I think a mid-semester break is in order! No homework! No stress!

Feel no guilt. I don't mind the "happy to have them back in school" reaction on an individual basis. It's just when it's the cultural norm - the anticipated expectation - that it grates on me. When I tell people that I am NOT ready for school to start, they look at me like I have horns growing out of my head or something.
Also, the teacher in me would like to think that we manage to create a place that does not inspire fear and dread in the hearts of all children.

Hey J. I for one was/am happy to have school start. It brings some sort of routine to our crazy summer lives. Especially this year. We all (except Joshua) have been free all summer. It has been fun, but chaotic. I love being with my kids, but I am honestly not cut out to be a stay at home mom. So, I am glad they enjoy school and we can spend quality time together outside of that. I think that is the root of the ads, parents like me. "I love you to pieces, but honestly, I am a better mommy when we have a little break from each other during the day." Does that make sense? Now, I feel kind of guilty.

Do the Obamas count as icons? I think Michelle will have a place in history similar to Jackie O.

Maybe, the Jonas brothers gain long term fame, like the Jackson 5.

Miley Cyrus? Maybe, she'll be a real actress when they are in their 30's.

I wonder what cell phones will do by the time they are old enough to have one...

It is sad to see the icons of our past grow older. I saw a photo of some [previously not so] aged star recently that really made me do a double-take.

I adore John Hughes movies. I didn't identify with them at all, but they opened up a world that I never knew existed as a teenager. I didn't see most of them until I was older than that, anyway. He was an amazing talent.

What a great description of both boys! I can totally see them in that post. And the teacher comments are familiar; as are the mommy reactions. Now you have me thinking of what fruits my boys would be. None of them seem to be either apples or oranges, lol.
